The Grateful Dead was an American psychedelic rock band that formed in 1965 in the San Francisco Bay Area. They combined rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, country, gospel, and jazz into a very unique improvisational performance. They acquired a dedicated following of fans called"Deadheads". Although the band consisted of many members, the core band consisted of Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzman, and Mickey Hart. They only produced one top ten hit, but played 3,500 shows and are said to be "The Godfathers of Jam bands."
