After Jerry's death, Bill Kreutzman briefly retired in Hawaii. He kept busy with snorkeling and dabbing into digital art. He has released limited edition reproductions of his digital artwork since 2001 and continues to explore with digital art. In 1998, He released an album "Backbone" with Rick Barnett and Edd Cook. He then, played with The Other Ones when they toured. In 2002, he formed the band Trichromes with Neal Schon, Sy Klopps, Ira Walker and Ralph Woodson. Trichromes released the album "Trichromes" and an EP "Dice with the Universe." As well as play with The Dead in 2003.
In 2006, Bill along with Mickey Hart, Mike Gordan, and Steve Kimock formed the Rhythm Devils. This was an old nickname given to Bill and Mickey for their drum duets in every GD show. In 2008, the Rhythm Devils released a DVD titled "The Rhythm Devils Concert Experience."Soon after, Bill joined forces with Oteil Burbridge and Scott Murawski to form the Bill Kreutzman Trio; with the later name evolving into BK3. They continue to tour when Bill is not tied up with The Dead touring. Bill has also managed to have a radio show on Sirius Radio called "Drumming into the Light."
